Sabemos que para los españoles, los phrasal verbs son una de las principales dificultades a la hora de hablar inglés. Por eso hoy hacemos una segunda entrega de los 20 phrasal, esas expresiones que pueden tener mil y un significados, que no deben faltar en tu vocabulario en inglés. Colby Price, de Pueblo Inglés Diverbo, nos echa una mano en esta casi titánica labor. ¿Preparado? Ahí van:
1.Come back: volver, tanto a un lugar físico como volver a un punto. We'll come back to that point later.
2. Step out of/away from: muy útil para una reunión. "Significa salir para atender una llamada o hacer lo que sea", explica Price. Jim just stepped out for a minute.
3. To show off: presumir. His numbers are good, but he doesn't need to show off. 4. To take back: devolver algo y también, retirar algo que has dicho. My car is not ugly. You take that back.
5. Bring up: sacar un tema. Don't bring up the Gunderson deal at the meeting.
6. Cut off: interrumpir a alguien o cortarles el grifo. He was explaining the situation and you just cut him off.
7. Tone down: bajar la intensidad o el nivel al hablar. What you are saying is true, but you need to tone down your language.
8. Hold off: resistirse o esperar para hacer algo.Ejemplo: Can we buy the new photocopy machine? No, we have to hold off for a bit longer.
9. To pay back: devolver el dinero a alguien. Can I borrow 100 euros? I'll pay you back on Friday.
10. To kiss up (to): hacer la pelota a alguien. Steve is always kissing up to the boss.
11. To come around to: empezar a entender algo desde tu punto de vista. They argued a lot in the beginning, but the eventually came around.
12. To bring back: devolver, pero también significa rescatar en el caso de un concepto. They brought back the old logo and colors.
13. To point out: también útil para reuniones de trabajo. Significa señalar, destacar. The numbers are wrong, and somebody needs to point that out to them.
14. To put away: guardar, devolver a su sitio. When you're done with my laptop, please put it away.
15. To play down: restar importancia a algo realmente importante. Relativizar. We are going to have to play down the seriousness of this mistake.
16. To get around: superar una dificultad. How can we get around this problem?
17. To get down to business: ir al grano. Enough small talk. Let's get down to business.
18. To play around: hacer el ganso, perder el tiempo. They say they are really busy, but they play around a lot.
19. To run into: tropezar con alguien. I ran into my old boss at the trade show.
20. To run away from:huir (puede ser en plan figurado). He runs away from the reality.
